The prescription drug claims data captured for employer-sponsored drug plans in Canada has the power and robustness to provide accurate and comprehensive insight into the plan's past, current and future experience, including its financial performance and the health of the plan member population. By itself, however, the drugs claims data captured by the insurance carriers and/or pharmacy benefits managers is limited simply to the administrative information required for processing and adjudicating the claim.
In order unlock the true power of this data, it must first be integrated with comprehensive drug product information specific to the Canadian marketplace with drug classifications meaningful to employers. The data must then be run through a series of algorithms in order to measure all aspects of the plan's current performance, to understand the cost, utilization and prevalence of disease states in the plan member population, to measure employees' adherence with therapies that help keep them at work and off of disability, and to model the financial impact of alternative plan designs.
