PPIs: A Clear Case For A Managed Formulary
Conditions like heartburn, dyspepsia and stomach ulcers are largely managed by drugs from the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class. By inhibiting acid production in the stomach, these PPIs reduce the acid content that cause the burning symptoms associated with these stomach conditions. As a result of the ubiquitous nature of stomach problems brought about by poor diet, high caffeine intake, use of certain medications (e.g. anti-inflammatories) and abdominal obesity, the demand for PPI therapy has been steadily growing since they became available in the mid 1990's. In a recent analysis of this class of medications, the estimated total number of prescriptions for PPIs dispensed by Canadian retail pharmacies increased by 15% from 10.8 million prescriptions in 2003 to 12.4 million in 2004.1 PPIs routinely show up as one of highest cost medication categories in both publicly and privately funded drug plans.
